TOVE (2020) - a chaotic review by a dude okay so i randomly found this finnish lesbian artist biopic at 4pm with a trans friend and now im emotionally damaged??? like bestie went THROUGH IT. tove jansson (moomin lady) really said "im gonna be gay, paint titties, have the messiest polycule situation ever, and create children's characters" and honestly? icon behavior the VIBES are immaculate. 1940s finland, everyone's smoking indoors, her dad's an emotionally unavailable sculptor (toxic masculinity won), and tove's just out here trying to be a serious artist while everyone's like "haha draw the funny hippo creatures" BUT THE RELATIONSHIP DRAMA THO-

vivica: theatre gf, emotionally unavailable, gives you anxiety, you know she's bad for you but the yearningβ„’ hits different
atos: sad artist husband, beard behavior but he's actually sweet? complicated
tuulikki: ACTUAL ENDGAME, they get their cottage, im sobbing

the movie is SO beautifully shot it hurts. like every frame is a painting (pun intended). the colors? the lighting? the homoerotic art school tension? chef's kiss also the way it shows her struggling with her art being taken seriously vs having to make "kids stuff" to survive... the artist struggle is TOO real. #Irelatesm. like she's out here having her serious gallery exhibition and people just want the moomins. capitalism was the real villain trigger warnings: parental emotional neglect, wlw heartbreak, war trauma, the kind of sapphic longing that makes you stare at your ceiling at 3am

RATING: 2.5/5 would recommend if you want to cry about:
- queer history
- artistic struggle
- scandinavian melancholy
- complicated lesbian situations that span decades
- moomins lore

TLDR: sad gay finnish painter makes wholesome creatures while having the most chaotic love life ever. would get my heart broken by vivica too *plays girl in red while sobbing*
